Compaction

Compaction or dry granulation of granulous bulk material from a powder can be done with a Kompaktor®Compacting is the compression of powder into a solid form called 'flakes'. The powder is compressed between two synchronised, counter rotating rollers. The powder is fed to the rollers in a regulated manner. Here, adhesive forces between the product particles are created under high pressure between the rollers. Compressing the powder into flakes increases the bulk density of the material for the final product.

The Kompaktor is also called roller press, roller compactor, dry granulator or - when it is also used for crushing - high pressure roller mill. If the secondary crushing is waived, it is known as briquetting.

High-Pressure Roller Mill

In many processes fine substances with low bulk weight accrue. Often dust-free subsequent processing or landfilling is necessary or required. In principle the task of compaction is to compress - that is to increase the bulk weight of the product. Bulk weight increases of factor 1.5 to 2 are realisable, in special cases even up to factor 10. To improve flow properties the compacted material can then be crushed with a Flake Crusher or be granulated.

Benefits of compaction include: improved flow properties; particle size distribution can be pre-selected and controlled; dust free processing and consistent results.

Hosokawa Alpine offers a wide range of compaction equipment.
