Howokawa Micron offers a standard solution to quickly and easily create a safe work platform in conical process vessels.

For inspection, repairs and maintenance of process installations, occasionally work must be carried out inside the reactor vessel. In case of larger installations, these activities usually take place at a certain height. This involves risks and safety measures are therefore necessary, such as creating a safe working surface.

In cylindrical and square spaces with a horizontal floor surface this can easily be realized by building a scaffolding. In a conical vessel however, it is a lot more complicated. Common facilities for safely carrying out work in a conical reactor vessel vary from a ladder in the manhole to the installation of a complete work platform inside the vessel.

Hosokawa Micron has now developed a safe and certified solution that is simpler, faster to install and therefore economically more advantageous than the resources available so far.

Ladder with fold-out work platform

For inspection or work at the head of the orbit arm, Hosokawa Micron has developed a suspension ladder with a fold-out work platform. The vessel cover is usually provided with a manhole. The ladder is lifted into the vessel through the manhole and hooked to the edge of the hole, with the underside of the ladder resting against the vessel wall. The mechanic can descend the ladder in the vessel, fold out the work platform and have both hands free to carry out work.

Extended work platform

For larger maintenance work, for example if the entire orbit arm needs to be disassembled, a person must be able to stand in the middle of the vessel. In such cases, a folding platform provides insufficient work surface to work safely. An extended work platform is required, which is not easy to realize in a conical vessel.

Hosokawa Micron noticed that many clients have had a bespoke built-in platform made for this purpose. After all, there was no standard solution. In fact, everyone tries to reinvent the wheel using different methods and materials. And every self-invented solution must of course be legally tested and certified. For this purpose, Hosokawa Micron has developed a standard modular work platform which can be (dis)assembled quickly and easily, while the constituent parts of the platform can be moved in and out of the vessel through the manhole.

Safe, quick and efficient

Working safely inside a conical vessel has suddenly become an easy task. The hanging ladder with the folding platform developed by Hosokawa forms the basis. When necessary it can easily be extended with standard floor elements to provide a complete work platform without permanent facilities in the vessel wall.

This makes the Hosokawa folding ladder, with and without a complete platform, the ideal solution for working safely in conical reactor vessels.
