Process technologies for tomorrow.

PROCESS SOLUTIONS FOR ANIMAL-BASED PROTEINS

There will be an estimated nine billions mouths to feed in 2030, which will drive up the demand for proteins by more than 50%. It is therefore time to tap into alternative sources of protein, whether plant-based (veg) protein or animal-based (non-veg) protein. The challenge is not only to maximize process efficiency, but also to achieve the highest quality of protein meal since – due to a higher digestibility rate – this can play a key role in reducing the carbon footprint. Hosokawa Micron offers mixing and drying technologies that can tackle these challenges with efficient and sustainable solutions.

Key considerations when drying animal-based proteins:

  • Temperature impact on product
  • Digestibility level
  • Oil oxidation (PV/AV levels)
  • Sanitary design
  • Particle size
  • Sensorics
  • Energy consumption (carbon footprint)

Drying, milling and classification in one machine

Thanks to its unique design, the Drymeister (DMR) flash mill dryer enables the precise adjustment of a wide range of parameters – including the RPM of the mill disc and classifier wheel, the process airflow, the feed rate and the inlet and outlet temperatures – to carefully manage the residence time inside the drying chamber. This maintains the optimal product temperature as the particles pass upwards from the mill disc at the bottom to the rotating classifying wheel at the top of the chamber.

The DMR is also available with various mill discs and liners to adjust the particle size and amount of shear. The Hosokawa Micron R&D team will help you to identify the right parameters for your specific application. Besides ensuring that the animal-based proteins retain their beneficial properties, this all-in-one process step can give you an important edge in terms of efficiency, return on investment (ROI) and sustainability.

Typical applications

The DMR flash mill dryer is already being used successfully for various animal-based protein applications, including:

  • Larvae (black soldier flies, mealworms)
Larvae from insects such as black soldier flies and mealworms are a very efficient and also sustainable alternative protein source for Food & Feed applications. Decanted larvae pulp can be mixed with 'stick water' and dried into a nutritious protein powder.

  • Fish/seafood side streams (heads, bones, skins & guts)
Processing of fish and seafood creates waste streams like heads and backbones, skins and guts. These can be processed into a high-quality, nutritious fish powder with a high protein content for use in fish-flavoured end-products such as burgers and croquettes.

  • Split hides collagen (bovine, porcine)
Split hides collagen from the subcutaneous tissue of animals such as cows and pigs, after being decanted or 'defatted', can be dried, milled and classified in the DMR flash dryer. The DMR drying system produces a high-quality protein meal which is an essential ingredient in a wide range of Food applications, including sausages, burgers, nuggets and many other processed meat products.

Animal-based proteins and sustainability

Our drying technologies are specially developed to maximize energy efficiency and throughput speeds while also minimizing downtime due to maintenance and cleaning. Moreover, our 'total solution' approach to the design of your complete production line, including the drying, milling and classification steps, optimizes your overall efficiency and reduces your footprint.

As a result, Hosokawa Micron's DMR flash drying technology supports the shift to more sustainable production methods, in addition to helping companies tap into alternative sources of high-quality animal-based proteins as part of their own contribution to feeding the world sustainably.
